The importance of hygiene
A building material’s surface plays an important role in limiting the spread of bacteria and infection, which is why many sectors have such stringent health codes on the types of materials they can use.
When considering which materials to choose, especially in room types where regular cleaning and sanitisation is important, it is key to evaluate how a building’s products will influence its environment.
Choosing buildings materials that cannot be cleaned or which contribute to the spread of micro-organisms can deeply impact the indoor environment and the building user. In the hospitality sector, the improper cleaning of kitchens can cause food related bacteria to spread. Prolonged recovery times and re-admission to the hospital are symptoms of healthcare related infections. Five to thirty percent of patients contract at least one infection during their stay in a hospital.
Durable hygiene
To create a safe environment, building materials, including the ceiling, should be durable enough to be cleaned and disinfected without impacting the visual design of the space. They should also not provide nourishment for micro-organisms.
